Modern slavery constitutes a serious crime and a violation of fundamental human rights. It
encompasses practices such as slavery, servitude, forced labor, and human trafficking, all of
which involves the deprivation of an individual’s freedom for personal or commercial gain by
another person.
The United Nations defines modern slavery to include practices such as forced labor, debt
bondage, forced marriage, and human trafficking. It refers to situations of exploitation where
individuals cannot leave due to threats, violence, coercion, deception, and/or abuse of power.
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), this issue affects 50 million people
globally.
