An awareness-raising event was held in Ganja on the topic of “Combating Gender Selection in Childbirth”

On December 09, 2023, at the event dedicated to the 5th Sustainable Development Goal, “Gender Equality”,the event was attended by Khalida Mete, a responsible employee of the Ganja City Executive Authority; Aida Qasimova, Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs at ADAU; Rafiq Mahmudov, Chief Advisor of the Family Affairs Department of the State Committee for Family, Women, and Children’s Issues; and Parvin Guliyeva, Deputy Head of the Training Resource Department at the Ministry of Health’s Center for Public Health and Reforms. A key objective of the event is to eliminate the predominance of boys in families and to encourage the fight against incorrect gender stereotypes regarding sex selection. This directly contributes to gender equality and the elimination of discrimination against women.

During the presentations, reference was made to the regular educational work to shape adolescents and youth as a healthy generation, to prevent gender selection of children before birth and to eliminate gender stereotypes underlying the preference for boys among children born into families. At the same time, in reference to Goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals, it was noted that selective abortion has negative

 

consequences for maternal health and demographic balance, as well as for our national gene pool. Such measures are aimed at preserving public health and ensuring maternal health during childbirth.
